South Africa’s manganese export chain was built around a rail-centric model. The dust suppression application technology developed was designed accordingly: ore is treated at the mine before it is loaded into railcars. Treatment happens at source thus dust emissions are eliminated during the transportation and offloading process.

It is estimated that close to 10 million tons of ore is now being transported by truck thus bypassing dust suppression treatment.

Benmarc has developed technology to address this practice. The Truck Bulk Ore Treatment System was designed installed and successfully operating to apply residual dust control utilizing BM 515E. The solution of water/chemical is applied in specific amount to the top of the loaded truck. The solution percolates through the layers of ore thus coating the ore binding the fines to the larger material allowing the truck to offload dust free at either the transloading site or terminal.

Results have also shown the residual effects when the ore is transported from the offsite storage location the material handles dust free.
